Athens is a fantastic city to visit; of course, it’s the center of some of the most ancient history. It would be a crime to head to the city, even for just a few hours, and not check out the iconic Acropolis, at the very least!
However, many people fly into Athens Airport and want to head over to Piraeus Port, the vast port complex that is around 49km away. We know that Greece is home to countless beautiful islands, and it’s very likely that you may want to do a spot of island hopping or visit at least one of these summer-time fun spots.
The Port of Piraeus is huge, to the point where shuttles take you around the various terminals. It’s no surprise that it’s one of the largest ports in Europe. From here, you can visit the Cyclades, Crete, the Saronic islands, Dodecanese, and the North Aegean islands. It’s also hugely busy during the summer months, with around 20 million people going through every year.
Of course, you may want to look at traveling in the opposite direction. Maybe you have visited one of the Greek islands, traveled back to Piraeus Port, and now you want to head to the airport to return home.
Athens International Airport is known as Eleftherios Venizelos and is the largest airport in the country. The airport is around 30km from the city’s center and is hugely busy throughout the year, even more so during the summer.
So, how can you get from Athens Airport to Piraeus Port and back again?

There are three options: take the bus, the metro, or a taxi.
Athens Airport To Piraeus Port By Taxi
The journey by taxi takes an average of 40 minutes, depending on traffic. This is the easiest option for you, but it does cost the most.
- Yellow Taxi: If you take a yellow taxi, you can expect to pay 54 euros daily and 70 euros during the evening. This is a flat rate charge with daytime hours classed as 5 am until midnight and evening hours from midnight until 5 am.
- Black Taxi: If you choose one of the black taxis, you will pay far more (up to double that of a standard taxi) as these are luxury vehicles.
For either taxi, head to the arrivals exit, and you will find taxis waiting at doors 2 and 3 outside Athens airport.

Much like a taxi, except you can book ahead and have a driver waiting for you at the airport terminal. Someone to carry your bags, lead the way, and, best of all, you’ll know the fixed cost ahead of time, no matter the crazy Athens traffic.
Athens Airport To Piraeus Ferry Terminal By Metro
The next option is to take the metro, which is very quick and convenient. The metro station is around 10 minutes on foot from the arrivals terminal at the airport and is very easy to use. You will choose line 3 (blue) and then change to line 1 (green) at Monastiraki Station. This is very clearly signposted.
You can expect to pay 10 euros for a one-way ticket; the journey will take just under 90 minutes. If you’re traveling with a child under six, their journey is free.
You can purchase your tickets from the metro station just outside the airport, and you’ll need to go up a level to the ticket machines.
Athens Airport To Piraeus Ferry Terminal By Bus – Bus Athens Airport To Piraeus
One bus runs 24 hours daily from the airport to Piraeus Port and departs every 15-30 minutes, depending on the time of day. The journey does take 90 minutes, however, and can be affected by traffic. The good news is that this is the cheapest way to get from A to B, as the ticket is only 6 euros one way. If you’re traveling with children under six, the ticket is free and is only 3 euros for children between 7-18 years and senior citizens.
The bus terminal is between exits 4 and 5, just outside the airport’s arrivals terminal.
How To Get From Piraeus Ferry Terminal To Athens Airport
If you want to travel from Piraeus port to Athens airport, or you’ve arrived at the port and want to head to the airport, reverse the information above.
The taxi stand is directly outside the port exits, and the flat rate still applies for journeys back to the airport. You can also take the bus from directly outside the ferry terminal exit or take the green line on the metro to Monastiraki station and then the blue line to the airport.
The metro station is located directly outside of the ferry terminal.
